Cold tolerant, will even overwinter for an early spring crop! Sowing Start American Flag leek seeds indoors 2-3 months before the last frost of spring, sowing them 1/4in deep in a flat. Keep the temperature 60-70 degrees F. When they reach a height of 2in, transplant the seedlings to separate pots. Transplant them to the garden in rich soil and full sun, about a week after the last spring frost. The plants will be 6-12in tall.Dig holes 1-2 feet apart and deep enough so that the plant only emerges several inches from the soil. Water the seedlings and fill the hole with loose dirt. Planting Leeks are best suited for growing in the open ground, but you could grow several in large, deep containers or raised beds. To increase the length of white stem it can be blanched by gently drawing up dry soil around the stem in stages, but try not to allow soil to fall between the leaves. Water during long, dry spells and weed regularly. Harvesting Start lifting when the leeks are still quite small to ensure a long harvest period. Gently lift from the soil using a fork. Leeks can remain in the ground through the winter until they are needed.
